If I Tell You

As Creative Director, I led the visual direction and design of RAINN's companion discussion guide for the film If I Tell You. Developed through an entertainment partnership, the publication transforms a powerful cinematic story into an educational resource that equips parents, teachers, and caregivers with practical tools to continue the conversation beyond the screen.

01Project Overview

The executive summary

Challenge

Translate the emotional impact of a narrative film into a trusted educational resource while maintaining the integrity of both the film and RAINN's mission.

My Role

Creative Director responsible for the publication's visual strategy, editorial design, creative execution, and overall design quality.

Deliverables

Companion Discussion Guide; Editorial Design System; Publication Layout; Print-Ready Production Files; Educational Graphics; Visual Storytelling Framework.

Outcome

Delivered a polished companion publication that extends the film's educational value and provides caregivers with structured discussion tools rooted in RAINN's expertise.

02 — The Challenge

The Challenge

The publication needed to bridge two very different experiences: the emotional storytelling of a feature film and the practical guidance expected from an educational resource.

The audience included parents, teachers, and caregivers who required clear, accessible information to help young people process difficult conversations.

The design therefore needed to communicate compassion, clarity, and credibility while supporting RAINN's educational mission.

  • The design therefore needed to communicate compassion, clarity, and credibility while supporting RAINN's educational mission.
03 — The Insight

A meaningful conversation begins long after the credits roll.

The film creates emotional awareness. The publication creates understanding. By extending the story into a guided educational experience, the project gave audiences practical ways to continue the dialogue with confidence rather than uncertainty.

05Strategy

How the solution was built

The creative strategy centered on making the publication feel like a natural continuation of the film experience instead of a separate educational document. To accomplish this, the guide was designed around four principles that shaped the overall editorial structure and reader experience throughout the publication.

Preserve Emotional Tone

Preserve the emotional tone established by the film.

Approachable Information

Organize complex information into approachable, digestible sections.

Trusted Voice

Reinforce RAINN's trusted voice through consistent branding and accessible design.

Encourage Action

Encourage action through guided questions, practical resources, and supportive language.

06The Process

Eight phases, one throughline

Every phase carried a decision that shaped the next — and a lesson that outlived the project.

01

Editorial Grid

A magazine-inspired editorial grid provided the structural foundation for every page.

Key decision

Adopt a clear editorial grid that balances imagery and educational content.

Lesson learned

Structure creates clarity before any visual detail is added.

02

Visual Hierarchy

Strong visual hierarchy for discussion prompts made the guide scannable and easy to facilitate.

Key decision

Scale type and spacing to signal what to read first.

Lesson learned

Hierarchy reduces cognitive load for readers.

03

Typography & Spacing

Consistent typography and spacing supported extended reading and a calm editorial rhythm.

Key decision

Use a single type family with clear roles for headings and body.

Lesson learned

Consistency builds trust and readability.

04

Photography

Full-bleed photography inspired by scenes from the film extended the cinematic experience into print.

Key decision

Carry film-informed imagery into the publication.

Lesson learned

Imagery can bridge emotional and educational modes.

05

Color System

Color treatments aligned with the visual identity reinforced brand recognition and emotional tone.

Key decision

Apply the RAINN palette with restraint to preserve emotional tone.

Lesson learned

Color should support the message, not compete with it.

06

Accessible Layouts

Accessible layouts supported extended reading and clear navigation for every caregiver.

Key decision

Design for contrast and legibility from the start.

Lesson learned

Accessibility is a design input, not a check.

07

Discussion & Resources

Clearly organized discussion questions and resource sections guided caregivers through difficult conversations.

Key decision

Sequence prompts from reflection to action.

Lesson learned

Good facilitation design follows the reader's emotional journey.

08

Print & Digital Delivery

The guide was delivered as print-ready files and a digital PDF for flexible distribution.

Key decision

Build one system that performs across formats.

Lesson learned

Multi-format thinking maximizes reach without multiplying effort.

10 — Behind the Work

Behind the Work

In her own words

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was designing something that continued the conversation after the film ended.

Creative work has the ability to move people emotionally, but thoughtful design can also give them confidence to take action. My role was to ensure the publication respected the emotional weight of the story while making complex conversations approachable for families, educators, and caregivers.

Projects like If I Tell You remind me that design is most effective when it creates connection—not just communication. Every decision, from the editorial pacing to the typography and imagery, was made with the goal of helping readers feel informed, supported, and empowered to begin conversations that matter.

FY25 Annual Report

The FY25 Annual Report was designed to communicate RAINN's annual accomplishments through a modern editorial experience that balances powerful storytelling, executive messaging, data visualization, and accessible design. Rather than producing a traditional report, the objective was to create a publication that engages board members, donors, partners, policymakers, and supporters while reinforcing RAINN's leadership and mission.
